The pirate captains of Ubisoft's Skull & Bones will encounter mutinous crew members as they sail the Indian Ocean in search of treasure and infamy. The naval combat in Assassin's Creed IV
Black Flag, developed by the same Ubisoft Singapore team that worked on Skull & Bones, was powered by some wildly compelling resource pillaging. That's why Skull and Bones, as a PvP-only game that relied on teamwork, didn't quite hit the mark when it came to translating the mechanics into its own standalone game mode. The naval battles in Black Flag were enjoyable, but the game's pirate fantasy was what drew me in.
When creative director Elisabeth Pellen joined the Singapore team about three years ago, she focused on that. Skull & Bones became an open-world game after some playtesting because "piracy is about freedom and exploration," she said. As a result, Skull & Bones offers players the opportunity to create their own rags-to-riches story.
"What is the origin of pirates? During what time period did you become a pirate?" Pellen posed these fundamental inquiries to the project's development team and the historians they collaborated with. "The more I learned about piracy, the better prepared I could be for the future. We learned that the majority of the Indian Ocean pirates at the end of the 17th century began as outcasts or castaways.
